Days 1, 2 & 3 Luang Prabang: discuss Laotian Buddhism with local monks in one of the many beautiful pagodas that dot Laos’ religious capital; climb Mount Phousi—a sacred temple mount in the middle of town—to watch the sun set over the dark green hills and the Mekong River; visit outlying ethnic minority villages to learn about the locals’ textile weaving;

Days 4 & 5 Hanoi: (flight Luang Prabang-Hanoi) explore Hanoi’s bustling Old Quarter, where temples, markets, guild halls and handicraft boutiques line streets founded by artisans one thousand years ago; relax amidst the gardens, pavilions and ponds of the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, founded in 1070;

Day 6 Halong Bay: cruise through the strangely shaped limestone islands that rise from the emerald waters of this World Heritage Site;

Day 7 Hanoi & Siem Riep: (flight Hanoi-Siem Riep) browse in Hanoi’s art galleries and craft shops before flying to Cambodia;

Days 8 & 9 Siem Riep: marvel at the elaborate carvings that grace the walls of Angkor Wat; follow an archaeologist through the walled city of Angkor Thom to learn the identity of the god-king whose startling image is carved onto the Bayon’s many towers;

Day 10 Departure: enjoy a final browse through Siem Riep’s tempting handicraft boutiques, then prepare for departure
